Professional Development of Teachers

Revitalising Workshops

Workshops are refreshing as they bring in new ideas, new approaches and new perspective to your work. At Vedika, the English teachers got to attend two workshops which played an inherent part for the benefit and betterment of teachers and students too.

An engaging Story Telling workshop was conducted by Mrs Renu Chamarty. The emphasis was on how impactful stories can be in the minds of the children when used as a teaching technique for any subject. Narrating stories through puppets, music, props, short catchy lines and most importantly voice modulation, expressions and body language make children understand, associate and retain concepts for a long time.

The next workshop was conducted by Dr. Partha Saradhi. It was an insightful and reinvigorating workshop by an eminent writer, who carries 38 years of profound experience in the subject of English.

The topics taken up included effective ways of teaching  grammar and developing creative writing skills among children. The take aways from this enriching session were that teachers need to work more on developing the fluency of the children rather than accuracy, thus balancing language acquisition and language learning. In order to develop creative writing skills, the children must be given complete freedom to think, explore and come up with ideas. As teachers, we need to keep in mind not to evaluate the writings of any child as each one has his own style of writing and doing so would curtail his creative thinking process.

To sum up, both the workshops were very interactive and enriching with lots of learning.  It was an apt way to end the first term of the academic year, giving the teachers the time to  introspect and come back fresh with new ideas to implement them  in their teaching. To conclude “A good education can change anyone. A good teacher can change everything!”
